Coupled with the unmissable El bateo, this one-act zarzuela seems small beer by comparison , and is mainly of interest as a rare example on disc of music by 'Quinito' Valverde (son of Chueca's regular collaborator) writing here in partnership with Serrano. Cast, conductor and chorus do well by the piece, which works as a pleasant enough little curtain-raiser for the livelier Chueca sainete.
