El anillo de hierro
(Marqués)
Teresa Berganza, Carlos
Munguía, Manuel Ausensi, Gerardo Monreal. Coro Cantores de Madrid,
Orquesta Sinfónica, c. Benito Lauret BMG Alhambra WD 74555
Strongly cast and sensitively directed, Lauret's
performance has for many years kept the name of Marqués in the Spanish
catalogues - although his symphonies (recently issued in the ICCMU critical
edition) are at least equally deserving of a place. This nautical romance set
on the coast of Norway is an early work, and not especially Spanish in feeling.
It's old popularity was down to one soprano aria, "lágrimas
mías", full of feeling in the Italian style, magnificently done here
by Berganza. That having been said, this is probably an issue for the
committed enthusiast rather than the tyro.
