This three-act zarzuela with an Italianate setting proved a damp squib at its 1922 Barcelona premiere, and on the evidence on the four original cast numbers reissued here, Vives' score lacked the memorability of his finest works. It's hard to credit that the masterly Doña Francisquita was to be his next full-length work! Gorgé and de Castro do nothing wrong, especially in their lively dúo; and as the main reason for buying this CD is the substantial original cast selection from La villana nobody will grumble about the insubstantiality of this filler.
