Guerrero's last zarzuela, unfinished at his death in 1951, was completed (by his long-time orchestrator García Leóz amongst others) and successfully staged in his memory later that year. The story, a piece of romantic flim-flam set in mid-19th century Aranjuez, may be slight, but the score is winning, not least in the hands of this highly accomplished cast recorded soon after the premiere. Lorengar made her stage debut as Clara, and her heartfelt romanza "Mi cariño..." is the loveliest piece of singing and composition in the score. Frustrating indeed that this most attractive CD is only available as the bonus disc in RCA's handsomely packaged 6-CD Guerrero commemorative box. Nor do they include the complete Spanish sung texts provided with the companion zarzuelas in the set.
