Chueca's sparkling music for Carrión's little farce is freshly performed under Argenta's lively direction. Iriarte sounds on the matronly side for the young heroine, but Monreal sings musically as David - even managing a decent top B-flat in the quotation from Verdi's "di quella pira." The chorus is forthright, the recording upfront and reasonably clear. The coupling, rather curiously, is Serrano's exotic tragedy Moros y Cristianos, atmospherically done.
