Although seriously cut, Argenta's reading of this scintillating score - very different in musical atmosphere from Auber's setting of (more or less) the same libretto - remains a staple of the recorded repertoire. Lorengar has truly regal allure as the Queen, and both Torrano and Ausensi lend persuasively stylist support. The recording is better balanced and much better transferred than many in the BMG-Novoson series. A necessary CD until a really complete version appears.
