A Catalan sarsuela refreshingly different from the familiar Spanish masterpieces of its time; like Aria's earlier La Sarsuela Catalana (SL 1024) Foc i Fum gives us a glimpse of a tradition musically simpler and even more direct than its Madrileño big brother. Joan (Juan) Pons is the big name here, but none of the soloists are poor, and Busquier brings a real sense of theatre to proceedings. Worth hearing, despite short measure and an up-front transfer from the original LP.
