La madrileña, o El tutor burlado
(Martín y Soler)
Olga Pitarch, Miquel Ramon, Antoni
Aragón, Patricia Llorens, Santiago Santana, Ricardo Sanjuan. Capella de
Ministrers, d. Josep R. Gil-Tàrrega. CDM 0410
This was an unexpected treat - the very first stage work by
the priest-contemporary of Mozart known affectionately as Padre
Martín, whose Italian operas were to find great success in
cosmopolitan Vienna. The twenty year old wrote El tutor burlado in
Madrid as a through-written opera to a text adapted by Ramón de la
Cruz, and it was left to Pablo Esteve to convert the recitatives to
spoken dialogue and rebaptize it as La madrileña. The music of
the zarzuela version is conventionally Italianate, but not without many touches
of individuality. Well sung and played as it is here, by the Capella de
Ministrers on original instruments, this makes for highly delightful
listening.
