This interesting-looking issue is a let-down, at least for the zarzuela selections. Obradors was a persistent but unsuccessful zarzuelero, and this 1923 score proves to be of academic interest only. As with the equally uninspired zarzuela coupling the singers - notably the baritone mainstay Caballé (no relation to the famous soprano) and genuinely funny comic tenor Díaz - do their best to keep things afloat. The CD is worth hearing for the brief fillers from the composer's Canciones clásicos españolas.
