“Zarzuela Galas” don’t come
any more intriguing than this. In Basel from next month, controversial Catalan
director Calixto Bieito will be in charge of
staging Pasión, a “typically Spanish” evening of
highlights from “this unpretentious form of music theatre”,
touching “simple people in grotesque situations, bizarre characters in
everyday happenings”. The music is (as we know!) “full of passion,
sensuality and joie de vivre. At the same time it also “raises a
melancholic, even sometimes nostalgic look at everyday life.” The
production, conducted by leading zarzuela specialist Thomas
Herzog, will feature a cast including Leandra
Overmann and Karl-Heinz Brandt, on the
Kleine Bühne of the Theater Basel.
There are eight performances, stretching into the Christmas period, of what
promises to be an unusually lively zarzuela festivity.
