The huge success of the two special concerts held last season to commemorate the Teatro de la Zarzuela’s 150th anniversary has encouraged the management to create an annual cycle of concerts happily inaugurated in November. The four events boasted a roster of thirteen   Hispanic singers, along with the in-house chorus and orchestra under the batons of three well-respected conductors.

Jose Bros, Maria GallegoThe first concert unimaginatively repeated note for note a program with the same personnel given almost three years ago at the Real Coliseo de San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Subsequently issued on CD, this recital was devised at the time to showcase the sublime voice and technical security of José Bros. Neither then nor now did the presence of soprano María Gallego, the Barcelona tenor’s wife, add much distinction to the evening; her zarzuela interpretations are fairly plain and small-scale compared to the work of her husband. Although his solos were without exception brilliant, I’m most struck with Javier’s romanza from Luisa Fernanda, with which he began and which showed once again his extraordinary mastery of phrasing. On the podium David Giménez skilfully followed his singers, but in the intermedios from La boda… and El baile de Luis Alonso he failed to extract all the nuances that night from a somewhat inflexible Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid. An unqualified triumph, then, for Bros in a programme made to measure.

Ana Maria SanchezThe remaining concerts were of a very different stamp, repertoire rather than artist led. That did not mean a lack of supreme voices, such as Ana María Sánchez, majestic in all her appearances and transcendent in the romanza de la carta from Gigantes y cabezudos and Socorro’s number from El barquillero, demonstrating an overwhelming sense of the text, without ever compromising our pure enjoyment of her vocal quality. This second concert also featured the delicious Sonia de Munck, whose polonesa from El barbero de Sevilla was went for emotional rather virtuosic power; the elegant Juan Jesús Rodríguez, effective in the Vidal’s romanza from Luisa Fernanda; the enthusiastic Carlos Moreno, melding very well with Sánchez in the dúo from El gato montés; and the house chorus, which shone in the third act chotis of La chulapona. Miguel Roa discretely led an orchestra that was once again unconvincing in its own featured pieces.

The last two concerts were brilliantly led by Maestro Remartínez, who drew renewed strength from the orchestral forces. Both programmes were of particular interest, allowing us to hear fragments rarely heard even in concert, from works as diverse as El juramento, El anillo de hierro, Cançó d’amor i de guerra, El cafetal, El último romántico and La zapaterita amongst more standard repertoire pieces. What a pity not to have more of these lesser-known pieces – if this wasn’t the chance for that, when would be? And it’s not for lack of interesting works!

Four excellent women shared the spoils of these two magic nights: Carmen González shone as Duchess of Medina in an electrifying reading of the dúo with the Marquis de Caravaca from Jugar con fuego; Nancy Fabiola Herrera dazzled in the title role of María, Gimenez’s La tempranica; Milagros Poblador thrilled us in Francina’s sardana from the aforementioned sarsuela by Martínez Valls; and Milagros Martín made our hair stand on end as Rosa in the romanza from Los Claveles. Two baritones shared the stage with this famous quartet: Carlos Bergasa with the first pair in Concert 3, succeeding in that Barbieri dúo with González, more than satisfactory in Don Carlos’ romanza from the Gaztambide zarzuela; and Manuel Lanza with the other two tiples in Concert 4, outstanding equally as Rafael in La calesera and with in Lázaro’s canción from the zarzuela by Ernesto Lecuona). A pupil of Kraus, the Venezuelan tenor Aquiles Machado completed the vocal quartet for both events, exhibiting a strained timbre of unattractive colour; bad enough had he not been repeating his romanzas in both events, an unacceptable thing anyway in a cycle planned like this. In ensembles such as the Act 2 final of Jugar con fuego or the Margarita/Rodolfo dúo from the Marquès zarzuela, he was much more secure than when he sang alone. The Coro del Teatro de la Zarzuela under the direction of Antonio Fauró was always responsive, with moments of brilliance showing the way in the last two concerts, culminating in a heavenly rendition of the Song to Youth from Doña Francisquita and the concertante from Jugar con fuego.

This new venture began its course through the highlights of zarzuela with a very positive audience reception from four full theatres. We can give bouquets for its intrinsic quality, and above all for its enrichment of the Teatro de la Zarzuela’s lyric season. But we must also offer minor brickbats for the marginal programming issues: and the fact that it proved impossible to obtain performing materials for two of the numbers programmed, which diminished some of the appeal and seems incomprehensible nowadays. And for next year we made a loud plea: to give over at least one of the evenings to a relatively unfamiliar zarzuela, complete and in concert.
