De
este apacible rincón de Madrid (Javier) |
|
|
Javier.
soldado.
Siento ganas
de vivirla otra vez. Pero entonces yo volaba como un mísero
pardal ¡y hoy mis alas ambicionan vuelos de águila
caudal! |
Javier. From this peaceful neighborhood of
Madrid, where I spent my youth, one radiant morning I departed
with nothing more than my self-belief. I dreamt of impossible love and
great days of triumph, and my fortunes have been so auspicious
that I have grasped them. How forget the much-loved neighborhood where
I felt the first stirrings of love? Magic dawn in my heart where I
learnt to dream! And the road of life I undertook without more
fortune than the courage to follow the flag and love of an ideal.
The Goddess Fortune has followed me; good company for a
soldier. With Fortune for companion, on her wings I fly to
wherever she wants. Like a backwater of peace and of love, in my
hectic life, this place - what feelings it evokes! It is the life
that recalls my humble childhood. I long to live it again. But then I
flew like a poor sparrow, today my wings aspire to fly like the
Imperial Eagle! |

Luche
la fe por el triunfo (Vidal)
|
|
|
Mas yo no pido recompensa a nadie; mientras consiga mi ilusión,
morir. Mas yo no pido recompensa a nadie; mientras consiga mi
Vidal: Faith fights for the victory of a
liberating ideal. I, that am just a man, fight for my love. By
confronting me for life and death with the rival of my dead dreams,
liberty has found a faithful defender. For the love of a woman
that I adore, if I must fight, I will know how to quarrel; if I
must lose, I will know how to die. But I ask reward from nobody; as
long as I can fulfil my dream, that her love doesnt fail me. The
ideal behind my ambition is the love of the woman that I adore.
All. For the love of a woman anything in the world is
possible. Vidal. And the ideal behind my ambition is my
love for her. Nothing in life matters to me as much as the light
of her love. Jealous anger moves me, and she inspires valour in me.
If she requires my honour and life, she will be the keeper of them, and
I will offer her, if she wants it, my hearts blood. For the love
of a woman that I adore, if I must fight, I will know how to
quarrel; if I must lose, I will know how to die. But I ask reward
from nobody; as long as I can fulfil my dream, that her love
doesnt fail me. The summit of my ambition is the love of the
woman I adore. For those one loves, one fights with fervour,
happy to die! |

Romanza
"Pajarin, tú que vuelas"(Juan)
|
|
|
Juan. Mi locura non tié cura. Que
amargura.
quiere a otro.
Juan. My madness has no cure. What
bitterness. My suffering is no life, and I ask God for death;
as the greatest burden is to love. Little bird, that flies, spread
your wings, and with your golden throat tell my beloved, tell her,
if she is alone, that I am mad, because she does not love me and
she loves another. For her I cannot sleep and my deepest hurt, is
to be afraid because she is not good. Tell her that tonight at
the fiesta I will be watching her, and that if she does not glance at
me I will die for her. Tell her I am raving and sigh for her,
since I live for her love. That without her I cannot pray any more to
the Saints, that I don't sing as before in the lanes, and when at
times I try to sing, it's as if I were choking, because all at once I
sing and cry, like the babies, like the babies!, because all at once I
sing and cry like the babies. Ah! .... I dream of her. I'm
ashamed to have wept alone in my bedroom, knowing she is wicked,
that she's a she-wolf. Tell her that I always see her wherever she
is, and long to burn in her sighs. Tell her I'm raving, and
sigh for her, since I live for her love. |

"No
puede ser" (Leandro)
|
|
|
Leandro. ¡No puede ser! Esa mujer es
buena.
¡No
porque la ví llorar. Los ojos que lloran no saben mentir;
amor, porque no sé fingir, porque no sé callar,
porque no sé vivir. |
Leandro. It cannot be so! This woman is good.
She cannot be a bad woman! In her look, like a strange light, I've seen
that this woman is unhappy. She cannot be a cheap siren who has
poisoned every moment of my life. It cannot be so! Because I've seen her
pray, because I've seen her love, because I've seen her cry!
Those eyes that cry don't know how to lie. Bad women do not look like
that. Glinting in her eyes I saw two tears, and my hope is, they glint
for me. Vivid light of my hopes! Take pity on my love!
Because I cannot pretend, because I cannot be silent, because I cannot
live! |

"Gon,
golondrón" (Rufo)
|
|
|
Rufo. ¡Ganapanes! ¡Atrevidos!
atrevimiento. ¡Y he de ver! ¡Y he de callar! ¡Rayos y
¡Ah!
he de ver! ¡Y he de callar! ¡Rayos etc. Gon,
golondrón etc. |
Rufo. Yokels! Insolent! And to mock me,
too! They neither respect my presence, nor that I am their
overseer. It is my unfortunate fate, how bitter is my destiny,
my destiny to be in charge of this whole estate. An honest,
conscientious man I fulfil my duties attentively, but at the same
time everyone treats me as a cure-all taking advantage of my
presence with some impudence or other. I have to watch! I have to keep
quiet! Thunder and Lightning! it's too much, cartloads of
devils, wouldn't manage it. Ah! Swall, swallow, swallow, they
come to me swall, swallow they question me thus: "Rufo dear,
swallow, swallow, tell me, tell me, why do you carry that gamebag."
Yesterday the Mistress came to take charge of her inheritance, and
her cousin who is so clever came with her, and is in love with her. And
their guardians have ordered me to take diligent care of them, and
watch their dallyings for any impropriety, and at my age, this is,
gentlemen! an inappropriate role. I have to watch! I have to keep
quiet! Thunder etc. Swall, swallow etc. |

Dúo: "Rufo, amigo"(Rosa y Rufo)
|
Duet: "Rufo, my
friend"(Rosa and Rufo)
|
|
Rosa. Rufo, amigo. Rufo.
¡Señorita! A servirla estoy dispuesto. ¡Mande
usted! Rosa. Ve enseguidita, busca a Pablo y tráele
presto. Anda, Rufo, por favor. Le dirás que quiero hablarle.
Rufo. ¿Pablo? Rosa. Sí. Pablo el
pastor. Rufo.
solicita.) Rosa. ¿Qué murmuras?
Rufo. ¡Nada, nada! Rosa. Tráeme a Pablo.
corre, pronto. ¿No me ves emocionada? Rufo. (Con
amarga resignación hace medio mutis) Gon golondrón,
golondrina, simplón, dime por qué llevas ese
zurrón! Rosa.
¡Alma mía¡ ¡No sé qué hacer!
Rufo. ¡Señorita, qué horror, querer a un
pastor! Esa locura es imposible. Rosa. ¡Le amo!
Rufo. A casarse usted va; novio tiene va. Habrá un
escándalo terrible! Rosa. ¡Pablo!
Rufo. Yo no traigo al pastor. Rosa. Sólo ya mando
aquí. Rufo. Pero yo tengo miedo; se enteran sus
tíos y pobre de mí. Rosa. Sólo yo
mando aquí. Rufo. No lo puedo negar. Pero yo tal
locura no puedo amparar. Rosa. ¡Óyeme! ...
Rufo. No la puedo escuchar. Rosa.
¡Cállate! Rufo. No me puedo callar.
Rosa.
amor. Rosa. ¡Esa mujer bellísima! ...
¡De ojos plácidos! ... ¡Me robó al pastor!
... Rufo. ¡Ay, señorita mía! ...
Reflexionad, ¡qué dirá la gente! ... Rosa.
¡Cállate! ... Rufo. Vais a casar y es una
picardía. Rosa. ¡Basta ya! ...
Rufo. Oidme a mí que hablo de ver ... Rosa.
¡Qué impertinente! Rufo. ¡Ah!
¡Señora mía! ¡Que la razón ha de inspirar
al corazón! Rosa. Me traes a Pablo, le quiero
hablar. Rufo. (Haciendo burla) La, la, la. Cerca de
una fuente le voy a buscar. Rosa. Venturoso amor, oigo
tu rumor grato y dulcemente. Yo lucharé con brío.
Bendeciré ese feliz amor mío. Feliz seré con tal
desvarío, dulce ensueño que fiel guardaré.
Rufo. ¡Locura! ¡locura! ¡locura! ¡Voy a
buscar al pastor! Rosa. Di que aquí le aguardo! ...
Rufo. Voy. (Resignado hace mutis) ¡Gon
golondrón, golondrina, simplón! ... |
Rosa. Rufo, my friend. Rufo.
Miss! At your service. Your orders! Rosa. Go
immediately, look for Pablo and bring him presto. Go, Rufo,
please. Tell him I want to speak with him. Rufo. Pablo?
Rosa. Yes. Pablo the shepherd. Rufo. (Already I
smell trouble, the Mistress is mad, she's fallen for the shepherd
and wants my help.) Rosa. What are you muttering?
Rufo. Nothing, nothing! Rosa. Bring Pablo. Run,
pronto. Can't you see I'm excited? Rufo. (With bitter
resignation makes to leave) Swallow, swallow, silly fool, Tell
me why you carry that gamebag! Rosa. (Stopping Rufo,
speaks confidencially to him) For that shepherd has my heart! I
saw him, he looked at me and his gaze transfixed me. Likewise,
I gazed at him an instant; he blushed! I was left confused, but
felt a unexpected content, that flowed through all my being and
transformed my life. What immense joy! Oh! Great power of his
glance, that could make a woman enamoured! My God! I don't know
what to do! Rufo. Mistress, how dreadful to fall for a
shepherd! That is madly impossible. Rosa. I love him!
Rufo. You are going to be married; taking a bridegroom.
There'll be a terrible scandal! Rosa. Pablo!
Rufo. I'll not bring the shepherd. Rosa. I've already
commanded.it Rufo. But I am afraid; your uncles will find
out and the worse for me. Rosa. Only I give orders
here. Rufo. I can't deny it. But such insanity I cannot
assist. Rosa. Hear me! ... Rufo. I can't
listen. Rosa. Silence! Rufo. You can't shut me
up. Rosa. There, by the spring, I found him. I came
forward breathlessly, and in that same moment, I fell in love.
Rufo. (How horrible! ... ) Rosa. I was about to speak to
him, but from inside the thicket, she appeared. Rufo.
Go on! ... Rosa. A sweet creature. She greeted me, and with
tender joy the shepherdess embraced Pablo. Rufo. That was
Maruxa. Rosa. Maruxa, yes, that was the shepherdess.
Rufo. Truly, Pablo loves her, as this shows. And in these
meadows the shepherds are not lambs, more like cruel wolves in
love. Rosa. That woman bellisima! ... Those calm
eyes! ... Rob me of my shepherd! ... Rufo. Ay, mistress!
... Think what people will say ... Rosa. Silence! ...
Rufo. About to marry and such mischief. Rosa.
Enough! ... Rufo. Listen to what I've seen ...
Rosa. How impertinent! Rufo. Ah, Mistress! Let
reason rule your heart! Rosa. Bring me Pablo, I want to
speak to him. Rufo. (Mockingly) La, la, la. By the
spring I'll go seek him. Rosa. Dangerous love, I hear
your whisper, pleasing and sweet. I will fight with spirit. I will
bless this happy love. Happy with such delirium, sweet dream I will
faithfully keep. Rufo. Madness! madness! madness! I'll go
look for the shepherd! Rosa. I'll wait for him here! ...
Rufo. I'm off. (Exits resignedly) Swall,
swallow! swallow, silly fool! ... |
